Microsoft is making a voluntary departure package available to about 60,000 employees—approximately one-fourth of its worldwide staff. Eligibility covers workers in Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the U.S. who hold positions no higher than vice president. Microsoft said eligible employees would receive an email Monday, and the offer will remain open for a limited time.

The package provides financial assistance and career-planning support for mid-level employees who decide to leave. Microsoft also expects the program to lower labor expenses. Some groups cannot participate, including people working on data centers and employees in sales and marketing.

The workforce move comes as Microsoft directs more money toward artificial intelligence. Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood said the company anticipates spending $175 billion during 2026 on AI infrastructure, with data centers among those investments. Microsoft reported 223,000 employees worldwide at June’s close, compared with 228,000 when 2025 ended.

This is Microsoft’s second voluntary buyout program this year. A May plan covered about 8,750 people, equal to 7% of its U.S. employees. In July, Microsoft announced 4,800 job cuts—roughly 2% of its worldwide workforce—including many positions within its Xbox video game operation.
