Pianist Yunjuong Park Marks Six Years in Spokane

The recital coincided with six years since Yunjuong Park settled in Spokane alongside her family. At the Steinway Gallery in Spokane Valley, she presented a solo program devoted to Alexander Scriabin, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Modest Mussorgsky. Park told listeners that her preparation led her to treat each note like a person deserving attention, an approach that shaped the entire performance.

In Scriabin’s “Two Poems,” Park brought definition to the music’s separate lines rather than allowing its harmonies to blend indistinctly. She applied the same precision to Rachmaninoff’s “Variations on a Theme of Corelli” from 1931, distinguishing its densely layered voices while connecting all 20 variations into one sustained arc. The performance gradually intensified through the final variation, then shifted into the coda with restraint.

Park closed with Mussorgsky’s 1874 suite “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Its gallery-inspired structure follows a listener past 10 works by the composer’s friend Victor Hartmann, with moods ranging from playful and sarcastic to grave and monumental. Park’s playing emphasized the original piano version’s orchestral range of color as well as its technical demands. Her stamina stood out in “The Market at Limoges,” while “The Great Gate at Kiev” supplied the suite’s majestic conclusion. The performance also marked Park’s continuing presence in Spokane’s cultural life, six years after her family’s arrival.
