Tuesday morning’s shooting near the Spokane Valley Library left one man dead and another man in police custody. Gunfire occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the area of East Sprague Avenue and North Herald Road, close to the library’s walkup ballot dropbox.

Deputies headed to the scene after one 911 call. Before they arrived, a second caller identified himself as the person who fired the shot. Officers detained that man, then attempted to save the wounded man. He was found beside the library on its southwest side, opposite Mindset Fitness. A firearm was recovered, but Chief Dave Ellis did not confirm that it was the gun involved.

Ellis said investigators viewed the shooting as a single, contained incident with no ongoing public danger. He did not address whether it was connected to the ballot dropbox or discuss unverified accounts of an argument beforehand. The library’s voting station continued operating through 8 p.m., with visitors directed to reach the area by coming from the north.
